Graphic Design graduate designs hotel suite for Kylie

An opportunity to design a luxury hotel suite for Kylie Minogue was a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity for Matthew Hulme, a graduate of the BA(Hons) Graphic Design course.

The Moulin Rouge Suite, re-designed by Matthew Hulme
Matthew was responsible for the design and large scale refurbishment of the ‘Moulin Rouge’ suite in Manchester’s Malmaison Hotel. The suite was designed exclusively for Kylie during her Homecoming appearances in January.

“The job was amazing and the absolute dream role for me,” Matthew said.

Matthew is an Interior Designer with the Malmaison and Hotel du Vin hotel chains. Primarily based in London, Matthew works as part of team responsible for the design of every aspect of the hotels: from mood boards, layouts and elevations in AutoCAD to colour schemes and furniture design…basically every element of design is considered and decided by his team.

Paris, the Moulin Rouge and the Theatre of Dreams were the main inspirations for the colours used: Reds, Blacks and Golds. The Suite features a large four poster bed, a feature combination unit combining a 42” LCD TV with state of the art BOSE lifestyle system. The lounge area features a ‘Champagne bean bag’ sofa and armchair with a hard surround plus bean bag cushions in the centre to sink into.

The suite’s wallpaper gives the room a dark and luxurious feel with its beautiful black design and subtle pattern by Today Interiors.

The main feature of the room is the freestanding “Plunge Bath” in the lounge area; a 1metre deep bath which requires walking up a set of steps to get into it and surrounded by a black granite surround. The finishing touch is the lifebuoy which hangs on the wall by the bath – just in case it was needed!

Matthew spoke about the appeal factor of the lounge area. “You can just imagine sitting in the bath whilst watching the TV with a glass of Veuve Clicquot champagne.”

The main idea and design challenge was to create a suite that was dark, moody, sexy and luxurious – something that Matthew felt he and his team definitely achieved.

As a final signature mark, the room has a copy of the “Moulin Rouge” on DVD.  The soundtrack instantly plays as guests walk into the room. “What a welcome,” was Matthew’s final comment.
