Year 7-10 pupils, Fowey Community College

Pupils at Fowey Community College have been re-designing the interior of their school with the help of BA(Hons) Illustration students from University College Falmouth (UCF). The ‘Grand Designs' group of 22 pupils from years 7-10 were asked to improve the visual look of the stairwells and corridor spaces in the English department of the School as part of their ‘Flexi Thursdays' curriculum enrichment sessions.

The UCF students and Curriculum Outreach Coordinator, Sue Loydell, taught the Fowey pupils how to research and plan visual ideas around a theme and how to use Photoshop software to create designs for large-scale textile banners and acrylic laser-cut images for windows.  The Illustration students and UCF BA(Hons) Contemporary Crafts graduate, Josh Kerley, then combined the pupils' images and ideas to make the final designs based on images, quotes and text from authors and playwrights studied within English lessons at Fowey.

The project culminated in a visit to UCF Design Centre workshops at the Tremough Campus where the pupils saw their designs created on a professional digital textile printer and laser-cutting machines.

Ruth Finlay, Coordinator of Citizenship at Fowey and tutor to the ‘Grand designs' group said the campus visit activities were, "all really useful and looking at the pupils' designs being created was amazing. For this age of student to get an understanding of university life is great."

Morwenna, a Year 10 pupil said, "The best part of the day was watching our fabric being printed,"and James, Year 8, said, "I really liked seeing our ideas being made and the tour of the campus."

Sue Loydell from UCF stated, "This project has enabled the pupils at Fowey to collaborate with University College Falmouth undergraduate students to design and create something unique to enhance the school environment at Fowey. It has also given the pupils a greater understanding of studying art and design at Higher Education level and enabled them to realise their designs to a professional standard."

The final artwork will be displayed outside the English Department at Fowey as a permanent exhibition to help improve the interior environment and celebrate the achievements of the pupils involved in the project.
