Producers, writers and directors from the world of film will be visiting University College Falmouth (UCF) to share their expertise and talk about what inspires them throughout January, February and March, as part of an ever-expanding guest lecture series, organised by BA(Hons) Film.
The lecture series will provide an opportunity for the local community to join staff and students at the Tremough Campus in Penryn, as all of the lectures are open to the public.
The first lecture this year will be given by Neil Waddington on Thursday 11 February at 6.30pm in the Media Centre Cinema at the Tremough Campus. Neil founded fortyfoursixteen, a production company that began life in a spare bedroom in Barnsley 10 years ago with the aim of providing exciting solutions to all forms of production that quickly gained a reputation for creating exciting and original work, delivered on budget and on time. The company relocated to London in 2002 and is recognised as one of the country's leading creative studios, with clients that include Universal, L'Oreal, JP Morgan and Comic Relief.
The series continues at 6.00pm on Friday 26 February in the Chapel Lecture Theatre at Tremough with Mary Burke who worked as a script consultant on Shane Meadows', Dead Man's Shoes and This is England, before producing Chris Cunningham's short, Rubber Jonny. Mary is the development producer at Warp Films, a company that is dedicated to finding new voices in the directorial field and that constantly strives to push the boundaries of film. Warp's close ties with Film Four have allowed the company to create some of the most original and compelling video works of the past few years and in 2010 Mary follows her work as producer on British Independent Film Award Winner Bunny and The Bull, producing Richard Ayoade's debut, Submarine and Chris Morris' highly anticipated, Four Lions, which premiered as the opening film at the Sundance Film Festival last month in America.
British writer/director, Paul Andrew Williams, won the New Director's Award for his film, London to Brighton in the 2006 Edinburgh International Film Festival, which prompted The Guardian to describe him as the hottest director in Britain. He s the only UK-based director to have been picked up by the Fox Searchlight Director's Lab.
Paul will talk about his work as a writer/director, focusing on his feature films that also include the dark comedy-horror, The Cottage and the forthcoming urban thriller Cherry Tree Lane on Friday 12 March in the Chapel Lecture Theatre at Tremough from 6.00pm
"It's extremely important that our students make connections with companies such as Warp, in addition to respected producers and directors operating in a range of film disciplines," stated series organiser Kingsley Marshall. "These guest lecturers exemplify the wide range of careers available to our students, and follow the professional practice options we offer; directing and producing, technical skills such as sound or cinematography, writing for or about film, in addition to academic approaches to cinema."
"In creating this series, the Film Department at Falmouth has focused on bringing to Cornwall talented creatives who provide a fresh perspective on film and we are very excited that we are able to open this series of lectures to the public," said BA(Hons) Film Course Leader, Karl Phillips. "UCF has developed dramatically over the past 10 years and the range of speakers is testament to our increasing interconnectivity with those involved in the UK's creative industries."

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.
This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2012/2013 that will be unique to the South West.
The College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One and Convergence), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
