Bella FreudInternationally acclaimed fashion designer, Bella Freud, will be in conversation with Patrick and Jane Gottelier at the Royal Cornwall Museum on Thursday 22 October. Bella paved her way to becoming one of Britain's leading designers with her playful style that combines immaculate tailoring with a coquettish edge, which has ensured her a cult following both in Britain and abroad.

Bella's fascinating and prestigious career to date has included working with Vivienne Westwood, winning the Most Innovative Designer at London Fashion Week, collaborating with John Malkovich on three short fashion films, and working with Anita Pallenberg on Memo, a limited edition magazine combining fashion, music and free thought.

In 2006 Bella was appointed head designer at Biba and achieved sales of £1.5 million after only two seasons. When she's not designing she regularly contributes to Vogue, Harpers and writes a weekly beauty column for the Sunday Telegraph's Stella Magazine.

Patrick and Jane Gottelier are joint course leaders of BA(Hons) Fashion Design and BA(Hons) Performance Sportswear Design at University College Falmouth.

In 1978, Patrick and Jane set up Artwork, a revolutionary label that turned the preconception of knitwear on its head. Nearly 30 years on, Artwork is an international fashion brand with its main markets in the USA, Japan and Italy, designing and manufacturing not just knitwear but complete clothing ranges for men, women and children.

Especially for this event, the museum will be showing some examples of 1920s and '30s costume made from Cryséde fabric. Cryséde fabric was designed and printed in Newlyn and later St Ives but was shipped worldwide. Its pioneering designer Alec Walker took much of his inspiration from the Cornish landscape and although the business was relatively short-lived, Cryséde is still highly regarded today for its fresh and modern design.

The event has been co-ordinated by Cornwall Design Forum, a not for profit organisation which promotes, celebrates, embraces and cultivates design in Cornwall.

The talk takes place on Thursday, 22 October. Doors open at 6pm with the lecture starting 6.30pm in the Treffry Gallery, Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro.

Tickets £8 /£5 concessions for Cornwall Design Forum members and students, (please bring CDF membership card or student ID with you on the night).

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.

This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2012/2013 that will be unique to the South West.

The College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
