Postgraduate students from University College Falmouth's MA in International Journalism are to produce an edition of the BBC World Service's World Have Your Say (WHYS) programme.

The programme will be transmitted LIVE from UCF's Tremough Campus in Penryn on Thursday 25 February 2010 at 6pm. It can be heard on all the usual BBC World Service outlets including online and on digital television.

It is the first time that the flagship programme has been produced by trainee journalists.

WHYS is an interactive discussion programme that is transmitted at 6pm each weekday. Along with the WHYS blog, it maintains a global conversation between BBC World Service News and its audience.

WHYS uses all the technology available to the BBC to make the programme as open and interactive as possible. It receives ‘phone calls, calls over the internet, text messages, tweets, emails and comments on the blog to set the programme's agenda.

"This provides an invaluable opportunity for our students to get to grips with their emerging multimedia skills," said Senior Lecturer, Charlotte Barry. "They will be fulfilling the roles of programme editor, producers and researchers as well as maintaining the programme's Twitter feed and monitoring user-generated content on the blog."

"It is fantastic to see UCF being involved in such a truly global interactive event," added MA International Journalism Course Leader and former foreign correspondent, George Matheson. "I would encourage students, staff and the wider community to take part in the broadcast on Thursday live or through the BBC blog."

The BBC World Service attracts a weekly audience of 43 million listeners to its English-speaking programmes.

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.

This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2012/2013 that will be unique to the South West.

The University College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One and Convergence), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
