Falmouth Journalists take honours at top industry awards for second year running

Polly Fields working on The Speed Sisters

University College Falmouth MA International Journalism graduate Polly Fields took top prize for her radio piece "The Speed Sisters" at the Broadcast Journalism Training Council annual awards which have just been officially announced.   Polly travelled  to the West Bank town of Ramallah as part of her  MA Project about a group of women there who have defied many middle eastern  traditions  to take part in the male dominated sport of motor racing.

The resulting programme was judged best radio documentary after beating stiff competition from around the UK.  The BJTC is made up of many of the world's biggest news organisations including the BBC, CNN,  The Associated Press, ITN and IRN.

Polly was thrilled to gain top spot. "I am delighted to receive this award from the BJTC. It is fantastic to have work I produced while studying at Falmouth recognised by an organisation such as the BJTC. There are always so many worthy entries from across the country for these awards, so it makes the win even more special."

There was success for two more MA International Journalism graduates at the awards.  Journalist Zoe Graham came second in the Television Documentary category for her film "Voices from a Shattered land" about the terrible aftermath of land mines in Angola.

In addition Ed Kiernan came third with "Trafficked" a compelling documentary about the abduction of children and young woman who are then forced into the sex trade in Southern India.

George Matheson, a former International News Correspondent and Programme Leader for Journalism at UCF,  said the awards showed that Falmouth continues to produce outstanding journalists;  " I'm very happy that  Polly, Zoe and  Ed's excellent work has been officially recognised by the news industry.  Coming on top of the previous year's awards when Falmouth MA  Journalism graduates took first and second prize in the TV documentary category, it shows our journalism goes from strength to strength."
