Falmouth Art Gallery wins prestigious Guardian award

Readers of the Guardian have named the Falmouth Art Gallery as the most family friendly venue in the UK.

Falmouth Art Gallery Curator, Brian StewartThe Cornish gallery, whose curator is Brian Stewart, beat hundreds of venues across the UK to the top honour, including the Horniman Museum and Livesey in London, the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, and the North Somerset Museum in Weston-super-Mare.

The judges for the 2006 prize included the 24 Hour Museum’s Head of Learning, Anra Kennedy, the founder of the Kids in Museums Campaign, Dea Birkett, the Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Scott Trust, Liz Forgan, Guardian Family Editor, Becky Gardiner and Director of the Museums Association, Mark Taylor.

A delegation from Falmouth, including the Mayor of Falmouth, Roger Bonney, and the chairman of the Art Gallery Committee, Gerald Chin-Quee, recently attended an awards day held in London.

University College Falmouth are to sponsor a forthcoming exhibition at the Falmouth Art Gallery in December 2006 entitled Long Studios, which will showcase the work of the distinguished architect M.J.Long who has designed many leading artists’ studios, including those of Sir Peter Blake, Frank Auerbach and Paul Huxley.
