Hettie Nettheim, Textile Design graduate (2008) and current print designer for Joules Clothing, visited the Design Centre at the Tremough Campus last week to judge the Stage 2 print students project, which challenged the students to design a range of seasonal prints for Joules.

Three winners were selected: Chloe Nash and Hannah Weedon were joint 1st and Tom Brindley came 2nd. A further four students had work selected as possible designs that Joules would be interested in developing commercially.

Hettie commented: "The Joules Project in which level 2 print students undertook this term was very exciting to be a part of. Each student took a different approach to the brief and interpreted the client in their own way. The variety of work presented in each project was commendable and the students' knowledge of repeat work is extensive for the stage they are at in their degree. Many students explored themes similar to those we gain inspiration from at the studio and it was refreshing to see their individual take on them.

ChloeNash DesignMy feedback to the students is to explore their colour work, scaling and to make use of the manual print facilities they have available to them, which should give them a greater commercial understanding when designing for the industry. I very much look forward to seeing more work from these Falmouth students."

Hannah's pieces clearly depicted the seaside locations she was inspired by. Her collection was designed for the spring/summer season and used a range of colour combinations. Chloe's project contained a fun use of imagery, capturing what Joules children's wear is about. She offered a wide variety of motifs, putting her individual mark on her designs, while keeping her collection fresh and innovative. Tom's strong design ideas made his collection stand out and showed a very clear direction.

The winning students will be joining the Joules design department for work experience, where they will work alongside the Joules print team including Hettie Nettheim, Miranda Hicks and Kristina Cartwright, all UCF Textile Design graduates.
