Staff and students staged a charity event yesterday to raise awareness of cancer and to raise money for the Made For Life Foundation, which supports cancer patients in Cornwall, and Cancer Research UK. Titled ‘Frock Cancer', and with the motto, ‘Let's dress to kill cancer,' the event encouraged staff and students to come to the Tremough Campus in Penryn dressed in their finest frocks and suits.

Frock Cancer was organised by second year Textile Design student, Cat MacEachen who said, "I am holding this event in honour of all the survivors of cancer, those who are currently battling the disease and those who have sadly passed away. I have experienced cancer throughout my family my whole life and therefore know how hard it can be. However, I also know how important it is to never give up the fight, to keep positive and to hold onto hope."

The idea for the event originated from Senior Lecturer in Histories and Theories of Design, Deborah Sugg-Ryan, who is herself a survivor of breast cancer and a trustee of the Made for Life Foundation. Deborah was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2007 and is still undergoing treatment: her most recent surgery was just three weeks ago. She commented, "As a cancer survivor, I have been very touched by the enthusiasm shown by my students in supporting the event, especially level 2 Textile Design who are a really exceptional year group. Special thanks should go to Cat for her amazing organisational skills and passion. Fortunately my cancer was caught early and had not spread and I know that I am in very good hands in the care of the Mermaid Centre at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. My job at UCF means a lot to me. Being well enough to return to work has spurred me on through my treatment, as well as the support of my colleagues and students."

Over £700.00 was raised through: a cake sale; a raffle; a nail salon to add some glamour to the day; and a 2012 calendar produced by the Made for Life Foundation and featuring cancer survivors in Cornwall. Prizes for the raffle were generously donated by Kitchen & Gifts and Espressini in Falmouth and Rapanui eco fashion clothing.

Cat added, "Frock Cancer gave everyone the chance to show their support and to unite everyone for one day to raise as much they could. I want to thank everyone that took part for all the hard work and effort they put in to help support those affected by cancer, but also to thank them for their support in never giving up trying to find a cure."
