Dana MacPherson, a choreography student from University College Falmouth's Dartington Campus, embarked upon a very special kind of journey from John O'Groats to Land's End, on Thursday 23 October. Dana is dancing her way from one end of the country to another in a 1,000-mile epic journey.

Dana has entitled this choreographic extravaganza Licence to Fall and has chosen to dance her way through some of the most scenic sections of this well-travelled route. In addition, she will punctuate her journey with performances at art and dance institutions along the way, starting with the Scottish School of Dance in Dundee.

Dana is fascinated by the idea of moving through space over a more extended period of time than the more usual time-limited steps and structures choreographed for conventional ensembles in the theatre. She is keen to explore a really long journey in the open air, and will ‘fall' through urban and rural landscapes. Her endeavour will form the basis of her third-year Contextual Enquiry Project (CEP), which enables students to undertake work that focuses on the effect of practice upon context, and context upon practice The project will conclude with a solo performance of dance, sound and film to be shown at the Dartington Campus on her return.

Dana will be accompanied by musicians, Conrad Singh and Tamsin Irving, who will also take the opportunity to collaborate and pursue their own individual sound interests. All three artists will take inspiration from each other, as well as the landscape through which they will be travelling. The journey will also be documented through photography and film.

Dana will perform her dance in a suit made from ripstop polymide, created specially for her journey, which will be rain- and wind-proof but will also allow her to move freely; and, in addition let the wind catch the sleeves adding another dimension to her movement. "As the weather carves the land, so will the elements carve my dance," says Dana.
