Falmouth students will develop a PR campaign for Brazilian road accident prevention charity, Vide Urgente, while students from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande del Sol will undertake a similar campaign for ShelterBox.

Using web conferencing, each group of students will brief their international colleagues on media and society in their home country, while representatives from the charities involved will provide campaign briefs and professional support throughout the process. Teaching will take place via weekly web conferencing facilities at the Tremough Campus.

BA(Hons) Public Relations Course Leader, Jon Cope, said: "This innovative project is intended to demonstrate the challenges of working for overseas clients in unfamiliar locations. Differences in language, society, and how the media works all provide potential barriers to communication that the students will have to work hard to overcome. We believe this experience will greatly enhance their future employment prospects and are excited to be working with Vide Urgente and Shelterbox."

Sally Grint, Fundraising & Communications Manager for ShelterBox, said: "We are delighted to be working with University College Falmouth on this project. We hope that projects such as this will help to engage students with ShelterBox, creating ambassadors for the charity and a new generation of fundraisers to help us grow."

ShelterBox is a disaster relief charity that provides shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disasters worldwide.

In April 2008, University College Falmouth merged with Dartington College of Arts to create a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing.

The merger will pave the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall in 2012, creating a Higher Education institution unique to the South West.

University College Falmouth is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council.
