Living in Falmouth & Penryn

The local community

Students make up around one fifth of the local population, so you have a significant impact on the atmosphere of Falmouth and Penryn.

Most local residents welcome your liveliness and creativity, and understand that you are here to enjoy yourself as well as study, but in return, they expect to be able to live their lives and enjoy a peaceful night's sleep.

We work very closely with the police, the town councils, Cornwall Council, landlords, the local community and the Students' Union, FXU, to ensure that complaints about late night noise and other anti-social behaviour, such as inconsiderate parking, are dealt with effectively. The police and councils have the powers to prosecute, and they do use them. If noise levels are found to be excessive, Fixed Penalty Fines of £100 can be issued, or an Abatement Notice can be served, the breach of which could result in a Court appearance and a further fine of up to £5,000.

We also have disciplinary procedures to invoke if you cause problems for local residents.

Noise

• If you are planning a party, let your neighbours know, keep the volume to a reasonable level and turn the music down if asked.
• If you play loud music regularly, please consider your neighbours, turn it down, shut your windows or wear headphones.
• Keep a check on general noise levels. DIY, loud music and loud conversations in the garden may also disrupt your neighbours' sleep patterns and daily lives.
• Watch your noise levels and respect the people around you when you are walking home after a night out. The Student's Union, FXU, runs a SSHH campaign each year - Silent Students Happy Homes - so why not ask about that and join in?
• Remember that there are families sleeping around you, including young children and elderly residents who need a good night's sleep.

Rubbish & recycling

• Recycle your rubbish by using Cornwall Council's fortnightly kerbside service.
• Put your rubbish out on the right day in a dustbin with a lid to outwit the seagulls and avoid a fine for littering the street.
• Ask your landlord to provide more bins if you don't have enough.
• When you move out of a property, please don't leave rubbish piled up in the back streets. Ask your landlord how to arrange for it to be collected instead.

Parking

• Falmouth and Penryn are historic towns with narrow streets, so walking, cycling and travelling by public transport (which we subsidise for you) are so much more enjoyable than wasting time trying to find a parking space. We strongly discourage you from bringing a car with you, but acknowledge that some students may need to do so.
• If you do bring a car, please park considerately and use the free long-term parking and Park & Ride facility at Ponsharden rather than park on residential streets.

Being neighbourly

• Introduce yourself to your immediate neighbours.
• Consider the impact of your behaviour on people who live behind or in front of you as well as those to the left and right.
• If you haven't been provided with curtains, please ask your landlord to provide them.
• Help your landlord to keep your garden tidy. It makes all the difference to the town and our relationship with local residents.
• Respect the fact that your neighbours, including families and elderly residents, may be living completely different lifestyles to you and do everything you can to be helpful.
• Ask the Students' Union, FXU, about volunteering within the local community. There are lots of opportunities for you to get to know local people and for them to benefit from your creative skills.

Personal safety

• Although Cornwall is a very safe area, it is still unwise to walk alone at night for your own safety so please either take a taxi or walk home with a group (as quietly as you can).
• Take responsibility for your own safety and avoid giving out your address on social networking sites.
• Lock your doors and windows when you go out.
• Consider the health and safety implications of having too many people in your house.

Local police information

PC 3209 John Dukes covers the Tremough Campus as part of his duties. Working with him are PCSO Lewis Vague and PCSO Fiona Gamble.

The Neighbourhood Team is based at Falmouth Police Station, contact details below. Please do not leave messages at the Tremough Campus office as it may take a few days to reach the team due to operational constraints.

The team holds surgeries at Tremough to advise students and staff on a variety of issues, including crime prevention advice, local information and personal safety to name a few.

The Tremough Campus office is located on the mezzanine floor between the Lower Stannary and the bar. To reach it, take the stairs to the left of the serving area in the refectory. The office is located on the landing part way up the stairs and the door is well signed.
