HelpMe student forum

HelpMe forum

Our online chat forum, www.falmouth.ac.uk/helpme (as featured in The Independent newspaper), puts you in touch with other students - both before you start your first term, and once you're here. Through the forum, you can get to know people, share experiences, find out more about your accommodation, talk to other people on your course, discover more about Falmouth and Penryn, and discuss anything else you'd like to know.

Examples of threads on the forum include: car shares at the beginning of term, students planning to start a band when they arrive, where to get hold of a bicycle, and tips about the best nightspots from students who are already here.

"I found it a great way to meet people before I arrived," says Contemporary Crafts student, Tara Jeffery. "It meant I didn't feel as alone as I could have, and I knew I wouldn't be moving in with complete strangers." Digital Media student, Claire Hughes, agrees: "I used HelpMe addictively. I lived over 800 miles away but the forum made me feel a lot closer and I made amazing friends through it."

Mentoring scheme

University College Falmouth's mentoring scheme matches second year students with first years, to help new students settle in and to answer any questions they might have.

From June onwards a student mentor will get in touch to help ensure that your arrival is smooth and happy. Your allocated mentor will continue to support and help you settle in throughout the first year. Look out for emails and forum messages from your mentor and ask as many questions as you like, big or small, they will be waiting to hear from you!

"The mentor programme gives you reassurance that everyone is new and in the same boat as you are on that scary first day," says Journalism student Mark Griffiths. "My mentor contacted me to check if I had any questions, and make sure that I was looking forward to starting at the University College," says Graphic Design student, Lynsey Woods. "It was very reassuring."

The Meet Your Mentor evening at the beginning of term will be where you can meet your mentor and other new students on your course.

Student mentor initiative online

Once you receive your student ID and password you can access the student mentor initiative on the Learning Space, UCF's virtual learning environment. Here you can look up the mentors for your course, view their profile (eg mature student or experience with dyslexia) and check any events happening with your mentor or mentor group.
