Research

Research at Falmouth

Research at University College Falmouth is about ideas: generating them, applying them, sharing them. Our emphasis is on practice-led and user-led inquiry that is collaborative in nature and multidisciplinary in scope.

We believe that research is central to our ambitions as an arts university of international distinction, as a driver of Cornwall’s creative economy and as a research-degree awarding authority in our own right. It feeds the knowledge base upon which our Enterprise Strategy draws and helps underpin the continuing relevance of our undergraduate and postgraduate curricula.

Our aim

To develop and sustain a vibrant and internationally recognised research culture that drives the college’s academic profile and underpins its contribution to social, economic and cultural advancement.

Our objectives

  • To establish a clear and cohesive institutional infrastructure within which to manage, and build further capacity for, doctoral and post-doctoral research
  • To improve our national and international research standing through focused investment in areas of demonstrable achievement and strategic advantage
  • To ensure a close and productive interaction between research and enterprise activity
  • To achieve a stable and sustainable financial base for research activity
  • To develop high-profile, collaborative research projects and strategic research partnerships with universities, creative and cultural organisations both near and far
  • To clarify both the expectations of academic staff in relation to research (as distinct from enterprise activity, scholarship and continuing professional practice) and the opportunities and support available to them
  • To embed research inquiry and processes across the work of the college, in recognition of the contributions they make to students’ development as independently-minded, informed practitioners
  • To develop a lively, challenging public programme of research dissemination that enables dynamic exchange between academics, students, alumni, practitioners, professionals, research partners in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.
