Dartington Campus

In your first year, you can either live on campus, in College-rented accommodation, or in private sector accommodation in Totnes and the surrounding area. From your first year at Dartington to your move to Cornwall, we'll put you in touch with the right people to help you to find the accommodation most suitable for you.

Residences

When you receive an offer of a place at the College, you'll be sent an Accommodation Information Pack that you can use to apply for College-rented accommodation on the Dartington Campus. (You'll be given priority as a first year undergraduate, vacancies permitting).

Accommodation on campus is situated at two separate locations across the site: Higher Close and Foxhole. Higher Close is close to the Students' Union bar and teaching facilities; it has over 60 single rooms across three separate buildings, and internet access (for an additional £60 per term). Foxhole, meanwhile, is 10 minutes' walk (through tranquil gardens and woodland) from the campus centre. It has over 120 single rooms and five twin rooms across five separate buildings.

All of the College's student residences provide you with your own washbasin, desk, chair and bed. Individual buildings share a kitchen, bathroom and social space (with television/video). There are also launderettes on both sites, and pay phones inside each building. Two of the buildings are designated ‘quiet houses'. You'll also be able use the refectory, which serves breakfast and lunch (Monday to Friday) and caters for all dietary needs. Rooms at Higher Close are £73.45pw, while Foxhole houses range from £65.00pw to £68.75pw. All accommodation is let for the academic year, and this includes Christmas and Easter holidays.

Private sector

There is plenty of good private sector accommodation in Totnes and the surrounding area. "I rented a room in Totnes for three years, living with a family but having my own kitchen," says Choreography graduate, Moon Ribas. "The family was very nice and welcoming. It was really comfortable, and the same price as accommodation on campus. I used to walk in to college from my house in Totnes - it takes about half an hour, and is a really good way to start preparing your mind for the day."

Private sector rent tends to be around £75pw, and our Accommodation and Welfare Officer can provide you with a list of contacts for the private sector.

Moving to Falmouth and Penryn

In your second year (2010), you'll move to the Falmouth and Penryn area. Most students studying on the Tremough or Woodlane Campuses live in private sector accommodation, which is available in both Falmouth and Penryn, and often within walking or cycling distance of the town centres. The standard of private sector housing is high, with many houses having gardens.

"I lived in a lovely house, found my landlady very friendly and the rent more than reasonable," says Professional Writing graduate, Gareth May. "Most of my friends said the same, whether they lodged with someone, rented with other students or lived on their own."

During your first year at the Dartington Campus, our Accommodation Services team - operated by Tremough Campus Services (TCS) - will send you an information pack about private sector rentals in Falmouth and Penryn, to help you organise your second year accommodation. They'll be happy to answer any questions you may have, and you can also talk to students already in Falmouth and Penryn via our popular helpme forum. During 2007, the average weekly rent was between £65 and £80.

The Accommodation Services team also organises Accommodation Fairs between June and September, so that room-seekers can meet landlords and staff, who'll answer your questions and arrange viewings. Current students with experience of the private sector will also be on hand to chat to you.

You can find out more information about where and when fairs will take place, and also search for properties on our approved accommodation list, on the TCS website: www.tremoughservices.com/accommodation

The West Briton newspaper and associated This is Cornwall website, plus the rightmove site, are also helpful house hunting tools - however the landlords and properties on these sites have not been screened by TCS.
