DesignEd. in Cornwall: 29 June-2 July 2011

2011 saw the fourth annual DESIGNED. IN CORNWALL exhibition at University College Falmouth. This three-day event showcases the outstanding design and technology work produced by students at schools and Higher Education colleges across Cornwall and is the only large-scale exhibition of its kind in the country. The event took place from 29 June to 2 July 2011 in the Design Centre on the Tremough Campus.

DESIGNED. IN CORNWALL originated through a partnership between Richard Scott, Design & Technology Team Leader/AST at Richard Lander School, and John Miller, Falmouth's former Director of Design, who worked closely with Richard to turn his idea into a reality. In 2011 the exhibition presented work by more than 360 GCSE, post 16 and undergraduate students from 24 schools and colleges.

A panel discussion was held on the schools day, featuring young professional designers who had a relationship with Cornwall.

A designer's life - panel discussion

Panel discussion

As part of the DESIGNED. IN CORNWALL schools' day, Patrick Gottelier, Head of the Department of Design at University College Falmouth questioned four young designers on their journeys from design education to careers as designers. Aimed at inspiring students considering furthering their design education, the panel also took questions from the audience.

Laura Carnell

Designer and business owner: www.rara-design.co.uk

Since graduating from Falmouth in 2008 with a first class degree in Contemporary Crafts, Laura Carnell has concentrated on building up her business, Rara Design, and perfecting her craft and digital skills. Following on from winning a student prize at Pewter Live 2007, she won third prize in the open competition in 2008, highly commended in 2009, and was overall winner in 2010.

Working predominantly in hardwoods with solid pewter and cold-cast metal inlay, she produces one off pieces to private and commercial commission. The work is time consuming and meticulous and she is continually trying to perfect the combination of CAD/CAM technology, free-flowing design and the temperamental nature of the materials. Using a mixture of these technologies and hand engraving, turning, spinning and carving, she gives expression to the various subjects that fascinate her.

In 2010 Rara completed several commissions including two sculptural pieces for a memorial garden dedicated to George Harrison and an inlaid jewellery box to compliment the interior of a luxury yacht.

Laura believes passionately in the benefits of good design. She is a member of the Association of British Pewter Craftsmen, licentiate member of the Society of Designer Craftsman and associate member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen. She also gives occasional lectures and workshops, and works with the local school career service to promote the arts in higher education.

Craig Oldham

Designer: www.craigoldham.co.uk

Craig began his career in 2006 by making-off with a degree from Falmouth and blagging his first job with The Chase. A theme that continued in 2009, conning Music into taking him on.

Craig has since gone on to make his mum very proud, having both his work and writing featured in the odd book as well as in Creative Review, Grafik, Eye, Design Week, IDEA, and Monocle, as well as being recognised with the odd award along the way (highlights include D&AD, Design Week Awards, Benchmark Awards, Creative Review Annual, Type Directors Club, New York Festivals, Roses, and Stockport Power League). He's also given his dad the odd moment, having work featured on Match of the Day, Football Focus, BBC News, and graced the pages of the tabloids and broadsheets (even the pinnacle that is the Barnsley Chronicle).

A fan of clichés, Craig too likes to give something back. Actively involved with numerous universities, colleges, and schools, Craig lectures and teaches, and has served on numerous juries for student award schemes, as well developing and moderating degree courses for Graphic Design. He's also involved within the industry on judging and steering panels and the D&AD North Executive Committee.

Tom Podkolinski

Designer, Finisterre: www.finesterreuk.com

Thomas Podkolinski grew up in Salisbury in the heart of Wiltshire. At school he enjoyed the sciences and art but found his true passion in rugby. A shoulder injury during his gap year put his rugby career on hold, and instead he studied a Foundation in Art. This led to a degree in Fashion Design and, three years later, a job designing for Finisterre, the award winning eco surf and outdoors wear company based on the north coast of Cornwall.

Finisterre has been Tom's life ever since, as well as a good dose of lecturing on the Performance Sportswear Design course at Falmouth.

All in all Tom is 'totally stoked' to be living and working in design in Cornwall.

Max Lamb

Designer: www.maxlamb.org

Max Lamb likes eating Cornish pasties... It just so happens that he was also awarded the 'Designer of the Future' award at 'Design Miami/Basel' 2008! A native of St. Austell, Cornwall, Max earned a degree in Three Dimensional Design from Northumbria University in 2003. In the same year he was awarded the Hettich International Design Award and the Peter Walker Award for Innovation in Furniture Design.

In 2006, he completed his Masters Degree in Design Products at the Royal College of Art, developing a concise, process driven approach to design. After a year designing for Tom Dixon Studio, he established his own practice and in 2008 began teaching on the Industrial Design course at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne.

Max's talents are currently in demand around the globe.
