07 May 2007: Porthgwyr Arts Garden: Chelsea Flower Show

Porthgwyr Arts Garden @ 2007 Chelsea Flower Show

An opportunity to design a garden at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show is a dream come true for Aline Dejaegher, Debra Craig and Karen Narramore – all of whom are third-year students on University College Falmouth’s BA(Hons) in Garden Design – an innovative course that runs in partnership with Duchy College at Rosewarne.

One of the most prestigious events in the gardening calendar, attracting over 150,000 visitors each year, as well as television viewers from around the world, Chelsea will provide these students with the enviable chance to take their place in horticultural history, before they even graduate.

Their vision for Porthgwyr (Green Harbour) – a garden that combines a Cornish arts café with gallery space, and contemporary style with sustainability, certainly caught the eye of the Royal Horticultural Society’s selection panel, and the students are now hard at work constructing their design before the big event in May, when it will be transported to London as a giant jigsaw to ensure the highest possible standards of construction on set-up day. Selected from hundreds of applications, the garden is one of only six to have been chosen for inclusion in the Chic Garden category.

Venue: The Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London
Date: Friday 22 May until Tuesday 26 May 2007

Garden Design in Cornwall

Cornwall is a fantastic place to study garden design, with its creative climate, horticultural heritage and diverse, dramatic landscape.

University College Falmouth’s BA(Hons) degree in Garden Design, delivered in partnership with Duchy College Rosewarne, is the only such course to be offered by a specialist university college of art, design and media, and is based in a stunning Design Centre at the heart of one of the most dynamic university campuses in the UK. Duchy College Rosewarne, also offers a stimulating learning environment and runs a Foundation degree in Horticulture that includes garden design. The Porthgwyr Arts Garden at Chelsea has been jointly funded by both courses, and is designed by University College Falmouth students.

Falmouth’s focus is on place, people and environment. Our students learn to create designs that respond to locality and the contexts that shape our landscape; that address the needs and aspirations of people; and that consider plants, wildlife and conservation resources, as well as promote sustainability. The horticultural and scientifi c components of Falmouth’s degree course are delivered by Duchy College, renowned for its particular specialisms in organic practice and conservation.

We hope you are inspired by our Porthgwyr Arts Garden at Chelsea – and look out for Duchy College’s garden at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show in July.
