Building your future

A fly through of the new Performance Centre.

University College Falmouth's new Performance Centre is an exceptional purpose-built facility for Performance students, practitioners and researchers, designed to encourage collaborative and cross-disciplinary partnerships.

Members of the local community will also benefit from the diverse programme of public performances taking place here over the coming years.  The Performance Centre will attract interest locally, regionally, nationally and internationally as a centre of expertise and innovation, heralding a new era of excellence in Performance at Falmouth.

The Performance Centre was a £19,036,000 project.  The European Union's Regional Development Funds provided £12,266,667 to support the development with a further £3 million coming from the South West Regional Development Agency's Single Pot. The remaining investment funding came from the Higher Education Funding Council for England's Strategic Development Fund.

"Perhaps one of the most exciting things about the arrival of Performance at Falmouth will be the most ephemeral and transient.  Walking through the Tremough Campus will never be the same: whether it's hearing the sound of a solo voice engaged in a community outdoor theatre event, or a full-blown gamelan orchestra heard through an open window, we will all know that a bit more creative magic has landed in Cornwall" - Professor Anne Carlisle, Rector and Chief Executive, University College Falmouth.

First Class Facilities

The Performance Centre

After considerable dialogue with award-winning industry consultants, the Performance Centre has been carefully designed to provide state-of-the-art facilities for Music, Dance and Theatre students.

Spaces licensed for public performance within the building will include:

  • A large theatre performance studio with variable raked seating options
  • A large theatre and dance studio with a fully sprung Harlequin floor
  • A performance studio designed for acoustic music
  • A performance studio designed for amplified music

Other facilities will include:

  • A further two large dance studios with fully sprung Harlequin floors
  • Three studio theatres
  • Music recording studio
  • Music practice rooms for bands and solo occupancy

All studios will be equipped with contemporary production lighting and sound facilities.

Encouraging collaboration

The University College’s long standing ethos of encouraging collaboration has also been a key consideration. “The Performance Centre will complement the existing facilities at Falmouth, providing opportunities for students from all courses to broaden their work into performance environments,” explains the University College’s Head of Sound and Vision. “It will encourage collaborations between the Schools to create exciting new performance, installation and exhibition projects.” The centre’s architect, Nicholas Burwell adds: “The project has an informal arrangement, encouraging chance meeting, activity and exchange amongst the users. It seeks to produce an architecture of open narratives.”

The Performance Centre

A dazzling programme

“The Performance Centre will also generate really exciting opportunities for collaboration with local, national and international businesses and companies, and the local community,” continues Larry Lynch. “Continuing the University College’s great track record of hosting quality performances, there’ll also be a performance programme incorporating theatre, dance, music and performance writing as well as exhibitions, conferences, and the opportunity for external users to use the facilities.”

Over the course of its launch weekend in October 2010, the Performance Centre will play host to a varied and exciting selection of contemporary public performance, under the banner of our new performance programme Platform.  Performers will include UCF students, staff and alumni as well as local, national and international companies.
