The Design Centre houses our 3D Design, Contemporary Crafts, Interior Design and Textile Design courses, alongside cutting edge business and research activity
Seminar space
The flexible, open-plan layout accommodates specialist studios and workshops, IT suites, and spaces for lectures, presentations and seminars
Milling machine
Facilities include the latest tools for designing, prototyping and making, including CNC milling and routing machines, laser cutters and rapid prototyping equipment
Wood/metal/plastics workshop
There are specialist workshops for wood, metal and plastics, fine metalwork, ceramics and glass, and a high-specification kiln room
Digital jaquard loom
Textile facilities include a digital jaquard loom, hand looms, digital and manual printing, dye lab, and comprehensive mixed media provision
Exhibition space
The Design Centre also converts to a multi-level exhibition space for our graduate shows every summer

The Design Centre
offers a world class teaching and learning environment for a
variety of designer and maker activity, and encompasses cutting edge business and research
activity. Autonomatic,
our 3D Research Cluster, investigates the boundaries of Design, Manufacture and
Crafts, whilst the Design Bureau offers a production and consultancy service to local, regional and national businesses and supports fledgling
student enterprises after graduation. The Design Centre also converts to a multi-level exhibition space.
Our facilities combine specialist Computer Aided Design (CAD) IT training suites, customised studio space, digital processes and traditional workshops. The resources have been chosen specifically to give students and regional businesses access to the most modern technologies available across a range of disciplines and industries.
3D Production - Adobe Creative Suite, SolidWorks, AutoCAD and 3D Studio Max software, ShapeHand motion capture system, 3D laser scanner, rapid prototyping, laser cutter and engraver, CNC router, 5-axis milling machine, bench top mill, vacuum forming, plotter cutter, spray finishing booth and design studios.
Wood - Spindle moulder, lathe, table saw, fully equipped wood workshop, broad selection of power and hand wood working tools, and general construction area.
Metals/Fine Metals - MIG/TIG welding, forging and casting units and fully equipped metal workshop, induction casting, brazing hearths, wide selection of jewellery cutting and shaping equipment.
Textiles - Scotweave CAD software, digital jacquard loom, computerised dobby looms, table looms, dye and yarn treatment labs, digital fabric printer, industrial scale print tables, digital multihead embroidery machine, sewing machines, industrial flatbed machines, embellishers, industrial overlocker and bespoke studio area.
Ceramics & Glass - Multi functional cross disciplinary kiln room, fully equipped glaze room, plaster cast preparation facility, clay preparation room, traditional throwing capability, glass finishing machine shop, outdoor raku firing area and studio based work environment.
