Janie Tonkin

janie_tonkin_web.jpgJanie Tonkin's work presents a collection of thrown porcelain objects, with the intention to create sculptural and intriguing pieces of art. Inspiration is taken from responses to mental illness and human behaviour - particularly psychological and physical processes that accompany stages between acceptance and illness.

The embellished surfaces have sharp and defensive textures that play with feelings of discomfort and attraction, depicting both an emotional and physical barrier.

Porcelain promotes fragility, which is reflected in the concept but reversed in the aesthetics.

Disguising the original smooth surface is a reaction to defence mechanisms and hidden feelings. By creating open and exposed vessels, the maker is presenting a chorus of screams confronting uncomfortable emotion.
