Harriet Caslin

harriet_caslin_web.jpgHarriet Caslin's glass objects represent the journey of becoming absorbed in a process. Verging on meditative yet on the cusp of agonising, the methodical process begins with an aesthetic pleasure gained from repeating, rotating and aligning a simple shape into a complex and uniformed pattern.

"I love that a repetitive method can completely change a simple two-dimensional shape into a beautifully fluid three-dimensional pattern. My favourite moment is when you step back from this complicated mathematical method to be welcomed with an alluring and intricate vortex."

The digitally developed designs are then cast in glass; a painstakingly accurate material choice that suits this meticulous method of working.

"Glass is such an unforgiving material. You cannot cut corners, repair mistakes, cover up flaws - There is only one chance to get it right at each stage of the process, and if you get it wrong you must start again. I won't accept anything but perfection."

The result is an all immersing object that invites a visual and tactile attraction, encapsulating the contradictions that are explored throughout the journey; the regiment and fluidity of the design and the pleasure and pain experienced through the process of making.
