Demelza Whitley

Demelza Whitley has spent most of her life living within a couple of miles of the sea. The sea and coastline both have an influence on her daily life. From as young as she can remember she has always had one question when approaching the coast - 'I wonder if the tide's out'?

From the rocky shores and cliffs of West Penwith, to the wooded shoreline of the Helford, as an adult Demelza's question became a statement - "Tide's out then." This later became a game she would play with her children as they travelled around trying to guess what the tide would be doing in whichever coastal village or tidal estuary they passed. This has been the inspiration behind her latest work which is made from paper clay using locally sourced clay found on the north coast of Cornwall.

'Woman in a Boat' is inspired by the freedom and movement of boats.

In contrast to the ceramic pieces, 'Oars' is a new, large scale, mixed media statement.
