Alison Hughes

alison_hughes_web.jpgLiving by the sea in Cornwall and Cyprus has led to Alison Hughes's work having a strong nautical element. The concrete gourds begin to resemble buoys due to the use of colour, chains, ropes, floats and pulleys influenced by the boats in the harbour.

This body of work was made during a residency at the ‘Cyprus College of Art' in Paphos, Cyprus following on from her degree at Falmouth. Alison observed Cypriot culture and the impact of the tourist industry along the Southern Coastline and how this evolved in the juxtaposition of the manmade and the organic. She is questioning the balance and consideration between the two, dealing with themes relating to our environment, domestic, social and gender issues and class status, de-familiarising the familiar. Placement is of great importance, challenging the boundaries between Craft, Fine Art and Design.
