Alexandra Storey

alexandra_storey_web.jpgAlexandra Storey's work focuses on hidden stories within our landscapes. Using layers of printed textiles, in this work she has conveyed the story of the polluted River Carnon, which is contaminated with a range of heavy metals from copper and iron, to arsenic and cadmium. This contamination is part of the after effects of a major environmental incident when a nearby tin mine, Wheal Jane, flooded back in the early 1990's.

Through this piece, Alexandra is taking the viewer on a journey down the river with a series of hangings, which widen as if to mimic the course of the river. The river runs through the seemingly picturesque Cornish countryside, via the peaceful Bissoe Valley Nature Reserve, the quaint village of Devoran, the ornate gardens of Trelissick House, and the impressive waters of Falmouth Harbour and the Carrick Rhodes. Portraying these scenes forms part of the River's identity in what appear to be warm, idyllic printed images. However, if one was to look a little closer, one may discover that the river may have had more of a part to play in the construction of this piece, rather than just having been the inspiration for it.
