Professional Media Practice courses at University College Falmouth

The first of University College Falmouth's Skillset short courses was a great success. This page will host updates on our new industry courses as they are released. If you would like to sign up for information on these, please email gabby.rogers@falmouth.ac.uk .

Led by Richard Williams, Head of Multiplatform at BBC Vision, and Dr Christine Truran, Developing Multiplatform Ideas began with a two day residential in Falmouth. The 13 participants, all media professionals, went on to collaborate in the virtual learning environment, honing detailed treatments for innovative multiplatform ideas.

Feedback from participants

"Really good industry overview. Covered all the areas I was expecting and more."

"Very good at demystifying the multiplatform world! A great group of people with a range of expertise. Lots of opportunities to ask questions and get advice. The location couldn't have been better."

"The 8 weeks support to develop projects is really useful. Also the opportunity to network and talk to people with similar aspirations. One thing I know I will leave with is enthusiasm and the urge to go out and work on my own project."

"Anyone working in TV today has to be very aware of the fact that there are much fewer jobs available to all of us. Anything that can develop your own personal career is a very good thing. It's an area that's growing at such a rate that you have to take responsibility for training yourself."

"Great examples and info - Richard was excellent. Good flexible structure and well-paced progression. Overall, excellent - many short courses feel rushed or a waste of time - this has been informative, inspiring, and useful in so many ways."

Course structure

The courses consist of a series of 20 credit units (each equivalent to 200 hours of study time). You can take one unit or several, making your choice according to your own individual needs and interests.
Each unit offers you the chance to get 20 credits at Master's level, so if you want, you can put a number together and gain a recognised, university accredited qualification:

  • Three successful courses (60 credits) gives you a Postgraduate Certificate
  • Six successful courses (120 credits) gives you a Postgraduate Diploma
  • You can choose to take an additional 60-credit unit that will give you a full MA qualification

All units are accredited, but you can choose to attend any of the short courses to gain new knowledge and skills without submitting an assignment or working towards a qualification. We understand that for many media professionals the academic award is less important than the opportunity to gain new knowledge and prepare for new challenges and opportunities, so you can choose to register for just one individual unit if desired.

Facilities

The courses utilise University College Falmouth's first-class Media, Design and Photography resources.

Short courses at other Skillset Media Academies

You can combine courses at University College Falmouth with courses at other Skillset Media Academies to work towards a recognised qualification.
