Support for distance learners
The Counselling Service is here to help in any way we can. We fully understand that distance learners may require our services just as much as the students on campus.
Although it may not be possible for us to engage in face to face sessions there are many other ways for us to offer any support you need.
You can access self-help sheets from our website. These are a growing collection of resources you can access to gain some more information about personal issues. If you feel that one of the subject areas concerns you, have a look at the sheet and feel free to print it out for future reference, or follow the hyperlink to a specialist website.
The Counselling Service has also set up a Bibliotherapy Scheme to help anyone suffering mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety, depression or a range of common emotional difficulties. Bibliotherapy is the use of self-help books and other resources to address emotional and mental health concerns. You can download the Bibliotherapy Resource Overviews from the website which gives you information of the range of books we can recommend to help you with a variety of issues.
Sometimes it can be helpful to let counselling staff know if you are having problems which may affect your academic progress on your programme of study. We can often negotiate deferral of assessment points, intermitting or repeating years with your programme leader or tutor, but only with your consent. You will need to contact our receptionist to make arrangements to speak with a counsellor if you feel this is necessary.
