Falmouth treats illustration like the vocation it is. Everything from day one is designed to guide students to work in the industry. I never once felt that I was doing a pointless exercise. The fact that the course was so professionally orientated meant that careers support was a constant thing. The knowledge of the tutors, all being working illustrators themselves, means the reality of the business is never far away.
The trip to New York in my third year, which included putting together a portfolio and showing it to industry figures, was very important. Not just because it was a great experience, but also because it made the concept of working as a professional illustrator a reality; much easier to imagine yourself a part of.
I won the D&AD Best New Blood Student Illustrator Award, which opened a lot of doors for me. I've been included in a feature on new graduates in Creative Review, had exhibitions in London and Bristol, and have signed to the Advocate illustration agency.
