Bean: Performance Art BA(Hons) graduate

BA(Hons) Performance Art*

BeanAfter graduating, I spent three months performing in Europe, including International Performance Art Hildesheim workshops and performances in Germany; the Nomadic Village event in Bulgaria; the Schmiede in Austria; and the Zoom! Westeuropa festival in Germany. Now I'm back in the UK preparing for two performances at Plymouth Arts Centre and working on establishing International Performance Association UK.

Studying at the University College formed my artistic practice, introducing me to a million possibilities. The structure of the course and teaching allowed me freedom to practice at my own pace with the support and critical feedback I needed to develop. I learnt useful practical tips such as places and spaces to contact, mail outs, dealing with galleries and festivals, and how to apply for things. On an academic level, my tutors dug out inspiring artists, material and theory for me to explore.

I began working mainly with video and this progressed into more performance work. I also experimented a lot with 16mm and Super8 film, photography within performance and text. The knowledge that your work doesn't have to be bracketed into a discipline allows you to develop your practice naturally, which had the biggest impact on my performance.
