Summer schools offer rich insights into the world of writing

The Introduction to Professional Writing Summer School
The UCF Professional Writing Summer School (14-18 July) is designed for people who'd like to explore the possibilities of making money from their work. Each day, an expert in their field will focus on a particular form of writing, from fiction and television drama to features journalism, non-fiction books and copywriting for business. Participants will be encouraged to stretch their existing capabilities and try their hand at forms that may be unfamiliar.

Tutors include the award-winning novelist Tim Pears; prolific features journalist Oliver Bennett, who writes for numerous magazines and newspapers including the Guardian and the Daily Telegraph; author and editor Susannah Marriott, who has published 15 non-fiction books on subjects ranging from complementary medicine to folklore; Jane Pugh, a TV scriptwriter and script editor who has worked on series including Peak Practice and Ballykissangel; and Piers Alder, Head of Copywriting at Dutton Merrifield, a leading branding, marketing and design agency.

The Writing Crime Fiction Summer School
The UCF Writing Crime Fiction Summer School (11-15 August) focuses on techniques to create compelling characters and plots that generate the kind of suspense expected by readers of this genre. It is taught by the author and academic Rosemary Aiken, whose many books (under the pen name Rosemary Aiken) include the highly acclaimed Libertus series of crime novels set in Roman Britain.

In the same week, the How to Write a Novel Summer School
The UCF How to Write a Novel Summer School (11-15 August) covers the techniques that every novelist needs, whether they're aiming for publication or simply wish to derive more pleasure and satisfaction from their writing. It's taught by the Cornwall-based author Jane Pollard, who has published 24 novels in the romantic and historical fiction genres under the name Jane Jackson. Jane's work has been described as combining "the grittiness of Catherine Cookson with the romance and period detail of Georgette Heyer".

With limited places still available on these summer schools, early reservation is advised. For more information about summer schools at University College Falmouth, please visit http://www.falmouth.ac.uk/summerschool

In April 2008, University College Falmouth merged with Dartington College of Arts to create a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing.

The merger will pave the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall in 2012, creating a Higher Education institution unique to the South West.

University College Falmouth is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council.
