Students return from global adventures to exhibit artwork

Five adventurous students from University College Falmouth presented a diverse collection of work at Falmouth Arts Centre last week. The Zweig Winners exhibition presented an innovative body of artwork produced by recipients of the prestigious Ferdynand Zweig Memorial Scholarship.

The Zweig Winners exhibition featured the intriguing work of BA(Hons) Fine Art graduate, Charles Napier who used the Zweig Bursary to travel to the annual Burning Man Art Festival in the Nevada Desert where he experienced stilt walking, magic carpets and all manner of bizarre artistic performances amid the tumble weed and cacti.

A selection of insightful photographs from a huge collection entitled The World Through My Eyes was also on show. BA(Hons) Photography student, Aislinn Pearson travelled to South Africa armed with a bulging bag of disposable cameras to give one hundred children living in Philippolis a chance to document their lives through their own eyes.

MA Contemporary Visual Arts student, Jane Atkinson travelled to Iceland to undertake practical research into the effect of trace elements in water on the landscape, which resulted in the creation of a site-specific installation.

BA(Hons) Studio Ceramics graduate, Maria Terzopoulou visited Turkey to research villages that still utilise ancient methods of producing pottery, an experience which inspired Maria’s own artistic practice.

Anne Karhu from MA Contemporary Visual Arts found inspiration in the Western Himalayas where she immersed herself in the traditions and cultures of Tibetan Buddhism, and took part in a farm project organised by the International Society for Ecology and Culture.

The annual Ferdynand Zweig Scholarship which is open to all University College Falmouth students, was established by Mrs D Zweig in 1994 to commemorate the career of her husband Dr Ferdynand Zweig, a prolific Polish painter, sculptor and former lecturer at the wartime Polish Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford.

“This year the audience for the Zweig Winners exhibition extended beyond the walls of University College Falmouth,” said Gallery & Events Administrator, Carol Worth. “In previous years it was an in-house event, but this year’s shift of venue to the Falmouth Arts Centre offered the public and visiting industry professionals the opportunity to observe an outstanding exhibition of work, displayed across a variety of media,” she added.
