Miss Peapod to serve up three-course feast of comic talent

dumbFUNDED theatre, founded by MA Professional Writing Students at University College Falmouth, is to stage its first production next month – a comedy extravaganza.

dumbFUNDED TheatreMiss Peapod’s Café in Penryn will host three nights of the dumbFUNDED Comedy Showcase on March 6, 7 and 8. The evening will centre around some of Cornwall’s most talented actors (including Miracle and Kneehigh theatre alumni and Penryn Community theatre regulars) performing twelve original sketches, chosen from over 200 dumbFUNDED logoentries to the dumbFUNDED sketch writing competition. Tickets are now on sale from The Poly box office on 01326 212300.

The idea behind the dumbFUNDED Comedy Showcase is to give people who love live comedy a chance to watch an evening of original sketches, and for the writers to see their material brought to life in front of an appreciative audience. The theme for the shows is ‘Town & Country’, with twelve original sketches chosen from over 200 competition entries by the dumbFUNDED producers and comedy writing star James Henry, who has worked on Green Wing and Smack the Pony. Each competition winner will receive a DVD of the show.

dumbFUNDED co-founder Robert Self-Pierson said: “It looks like there’s going to be a really electric atmosphere at these shows. We’ve had a massive response to the sketch-writing competition, actors flooded to the auditions and there’s enormous local interest building. Anyone wanting a ticket should probably move fast, as people were trying to book places before we even had them printed.”

Since opening in Penryn last year, Miss Peapod’s has become a key venue for emerging writers, actors and musicians from Cornwall and beyond. Alice Marston, the café’s owner, said: “We reckon dumbFUNDED have come up with a fantastic idea for promoting original comedy, and as there’s nothing else like it happening in Cornwall we’re expecting it to draw big crowds. On the Friday and Saturday night, we’ll be offering a special meal deal to accompany the show. Delicious food and a good laugh should make for a great night out.”

dumbFUNDED theatre was set up in November 2007 by Christophe Philipps, Robert Self-Pierson and Miles Taylor, all students on the MA Professional Writing course at University College Falmouth. For further information about dumbFUNDED visit www.dumbfunded.co.uk
