An exciting line up of leading illustrators and artists of international repute will take to the stage to share their expertise on the subject of visual storytelling on Friday 7 March at the Open Forum that is organised annually by University College Falmouth’s MA in Illustration: Authorial Practice.
Professor Andrezej Klimowski and Danusia Schejbal , whose graphic novel adaptation of Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita is published this spring, will be joined by Belgian illustrator, Dominique Goblet; conceptual artist, Jamie Shovlin; and Graham Rawle, the creator of The Lost Consonants series in The Guardian, who is currently working on an illustrated version of The Wizard of Oz.
Professor Klimowski studied at Central St Martins and the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, and designed posters for theatre and cinema in Poland. On his return to the UK, he worked as an illustrator for book publishers and the national press, and is currently Professor of Illustration at the Royal College of Art. He is also collaborating with Danusia Schejbal on short films and has produced three graphic novels published by Faber & Faber.
Danusia Schejbal was born in London where she studied Fashion and Textiles, later studying stage design at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. She designed sets and costumes for theatres across Poland and collaborated with the Cherub Theatre Company when she returned to London. She has since exhibited paintings across Europe and is currently working on an adaptation of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Dominique Goblet is a Belgian illustrator and artist who covers a wide area of visual communication. Her interest is in the multi-faceted and fragmented nature of narratives which she develops in paintings and illustrated books and magazines, and has published work which documents her life, tells fictional stories or a combination of the two. Her narratives have been published by Freon and L’Association and she has published three books, the most recent of which, Faire Semblant C’est Mentir, an autobiographical story, has received critical acclaim.
Jamie Shovlin studied at the Royal College of Art and is an artist interested in the tension between truth and fiction, reality and invention, history and memory. His painstakingly researched and executed works merge inherently flawed systems, pseudo-scientific exactitude and doubtful philosophical propositions and the seemingly objective experience of the archive. Shovlin has had solo and group exhibitions in London and New York.
Graham Rawle lectures on the Sequential Design and Illustration MA at Brighton focusing on storytelling and story structure. He is a writer and collage artist who uses illustration, design, photography and installation. He has produced series illustration for The Guardian, The Observer and The Sunday Telegraph including Lost Consonants. Among his books are The Wonder Book of Fun, Lying Doggo, Diary of an Amateur Photographer and Woman’s World, a novel created from fragments of found text clipped from early 1960’s women’s magazines.
“MA Illustration: Authorial Practice encourages illustrators to develop their own personal voice and to develop their own ideas and concepts,” explains Course Leader, Steve Braund. “The aim of this year’s Forum is to debate the process of visual storytelling and to consider current trends in authorial illustration, and we are delighted to welcome such high calibre speakers to this event,” he adds.
Although the event is predominantly for students, there is a limited number of tickets available for external visitors. Anyone interested in securing a place to this free event should contact Caroline Chapman on 01326 213841 or email caroline.chapman@falmouth.ac.uk.
MA Illustration: Authorial Practice has already produced rising stars such as Christopher Crump (illustrator of bestselling book, The Valley of Secrets), Viviane Schwarz (Walker Books author/illustrator), Barnaby Richards (author/illustrator whose work regularly appears in The Guardian) and Chris Stonehill, whose illustrations were recently commissioned by Boots the Chemist for its latest advertising campaign. Course Leader, Steve Braund, is both a successful practising illustrator and director of Atlantic Press Ltd, an innovative publishing initiative that aims to help illustrators explore and develop their authorial voices.
