UCF's BA(Hons) Illustration course has led the way, nationally and internationally, for over 40 years.

2008 is no exception, with major global acclaim for its teaching staff and yet more high profile graduate successes.

Course Leader, Alan Male's Illustration: A Theoretical & Contextual Perspective is regarded as the definitive academic textbook on the subject; is being translated into 30 languages for publication across the globe; and has been shortlisted for a prestigious British Book Award, the winner of which will be announced at a London ceremony in November.

As a leading natural science illustrator, Alan has also been commissioned by Yale University's Alumni magazine to update a section of the famous palaeontological timeline at the Peabody Museum of Natural History's HQ.

Lecturers Mark Foreman, Nigel Owen and Sue Clarke, are also held in high esteem by the industry. Mark's Grandpa Jack's Tattoo Tales was published in America last autumn and he is working on two further children's book projects. Nigel's extensive client list includes Penguin Books, You magazine, John Lewis and Crate & Barrel in the US, whilst Sue's encompasses Time magazine, the Wall Street Journal, Walker Books and Hyperion/Disney.

Recent graduate, Molly Maine, is not the first to benefit from such international industry connections. During the course's annual visit to New York in the spring, Molly was offered an internship with leading advertising agency, Young & Rubicam, which she will take up following completion of her MA in Creative Advertising at UCF next year.

Success before graduation is a key theme of the course. This year's Association of Illustrators' Gold Award winner, Nick Mott, gained a dozen editorial commissions from the Guardian newspaper whilst still a student. Arran Lewis won a job as a medical illustrator for the Wellcome Foundation's website whilst in his third year; as did Chloe Luxford, who found employment as a paper engineer at publisher, Dorling Kindersley.

These students join a long tradition of success. John Aggs is currently illustrating a graphic novel for bestselling author, Philip Pullman. Juliet Percival is the medical illustrator on Channel 4's live anatomy series with Gunther von Hagens. Joel Stewart has achieved rave reviews for his mixed-media book illustrations. Kasia Dudziuk is designing a children's book for Egmont. Ben Mounsey is an artworker for Cartoon Network. Bob Moran has won Design Collection's New Designers' Illustration Award and illustrated a magazine spread for New York-based agent, American Artists. Rachel Boulton has won the New Designers' One Year On Illustration Award. Emma Stevenson's non-fiction children's book has been published by Holiday House in New York. Lorna May Wadsworth has a succession of high-profile commissions and exhibitions to her credit, whose drawing of Margaret Thatcher recently sold for £40,000.

"The breadth of graduate outcomes is incredible," concludes Alan Male. "Our graduates are editors, image researchers and agents as well as designers, animators and illustrators, and we are the only College that delivers that combination of expertise and industry edge."
