Online Photography student wins Emerging Artist Award at The Photography & Video Show

Current Photography MA (Online) student Natalie Persoglio has won the 2024 Emerging Artist Award at The Photography & Video Show.
Held at the Birmingham NEC in March this year, The Photography & Video Show is an annual event bringing together some of the biggest exhibitors in photography and moving image.
Natalie won the Emerging Artist Award at this year’s show for her work Last Bus Home, a piece which is part of her master’s project exploring loneliness in urban spaces, using childhood locations as a canvas and incorporating slow shutter speeds, cinematic colour palettes and candid shots of people on public transport.
On winning the award, Natalie told us: “It’s an incredible honour that has significantly boosted my practice. The image is a key part of an ongoing series I'm passionately working on as part of my master’s studies with Falmouth, and joining the course has been an experience enriched by collaborations with a talented cohort, pushing my boundaries and expanding my techniques.”
Photography MA (Online) Course Leader Jesse Alexander told us: “We are thrilled that Natalie has been recognised in this way. We really hope that the award will help develop her research project and that the recognition will open the door to more opportunities.”
About Natalie
Hailing from the Northwest of England, Natalie is a successful journalist and marketer as well as emerging photographer. Her passion for the medium started as a young child, when she received a Kodak 110 as her first camera. She told us: “The thrill of waiting to have those images processed at the local camera shop was unmatched, and photography has been a constant in my life ever since.
“While I captured family holidays and key moments over the years, the coronavirus pandemic brought a shift in my focus; I began to document my family's doorstep walks and the beauty in the mundane during lockdown. Previously, I'd photographed live gigs, capturing artists like The Charlatans and The Stone Roses, but I was now finding beauty in the empty streets and everyday family moments, as so many photographers were at that time.”
Natalie’s work has since featured in numerous photography publications, and with further successes from smaller events and competitions, she felt encouraged to consider her photography as more than a hobby. Her travels across Europe allowed her to fully focus on street photography, while also shooting live gigs at large-scale festivals and music venues across the UK.
In 2023, as well as embarking on her master’s studies, one of her photographs from an early post-lockdown day out was selected as one of the lead images for Historic England’s Picturing High Streets exhibition, which is currently touring the UK. As part of this project, her image was projected externally and internally at The Photographers' Gallery in London, exhibited at the FORMAT International Photography Festival in Derby, and featured in various installations across the UK, from bus shelters to large digital screens.
